Learning from the mustard seed

An early Morning Devotion....

March 7, 2000

I had a stressful Monday in a variety of ways. The details of the distractions and discouragements are not the real story here, but instead the fact that disappointment was taking my attitude where I did not want to go.

Did I handle them with class and godliness? In most cases, yes. In some cases, no.

The original plan was nothing like this.

Share my morning devotional thoughts with a few friends from church via an e-mailed note every few days... that was the idea.

My thoughts were to be honorable to God and helpful to the handful of people who read them.  They already heard me preach and teach duing the weekend and Wednesday night, and a few of my devotional discoveries might help as well.

The devotionals, started more than eight years ago, did help the few church friends as well as helping me to better love and serve God.  Soon, I was writing daily.  More than 1,400 devotions later, God is still handing down fresh, spontaneous inspiration each weekday.

Through the years of writing, through the variety of mountaintop emotions and deep valleys of despair, God has been faithful.  He has kept His fountain of wisdom flowing through my intimacy with Him, despite my imperfections.

The few became the dozens which then became the hundreds and, as this site grows, will hopefully become the thousands.  It is my prayer -- and hopefully yours, too -- that many more than even this number will benefit from the authentic, "lower the mask" accounts of God's moving in my life and the lives of others.

One of the great proofs to me of His existence is the never-ending supply of never-planned messages given to me each weekday morning as I sit at the computer.  As a veteran professional writer in the secular world, I knew how difficult it was to come up with fresh, engaging content on a twice-weekly basis.  To offer articles daily that are interesting and motivating toward life change is simply not possible on human capacity alone.

I messed up the other day.

I had told myself that French fries were equivalent to delayed-fuse bombs, grease-covered dietary darts coalescing gradually to blow up my biosystem.

And, almost without exception, I've avoided the grease sticks over the past couple of years.

Then came the fall.  I was in McDonalds to pick up a grilled chicken sandwich for Melissa and saw that trick of the devil known as a "special offer."

I fell.  Hard.

Because of what God has done for some eight years and because of how many readers have responded, the time has come to replace the minimal website launched four years ago.

Major "mustard seeds" of time and money and prayer have led to this site.  It is our hope that this site becomes your site so that we can help more and more people to find comforting shelter in the larger tree of God's love.

A number of people have joined me in this effort that is much larger than what I can do alone.  Perhaps God will stir your heart to share an interest and ability He's given you.  When He does, please contact us to get started.
